I have been an Oiler fan from the beginning. I am starting this blog because for awhile I have watched the advanced stat and "saw" him good battle from afar. Not forming an opinion because I wanted to investigate it for myself.
Let me say off the top that I have no use for the derision that some advance stat people use for "seeing" him good. Advanced stats do not come from on high, they are based on someone watching "seeing" or watching the game and then marking what they see. So advanced stats are basically "seeing" with a spread sheet. Yes that is simplistic but I think I have made my point.
That does not mean I am against them either, I think they are a compliment to what someone sees, like a fine wine with a fine meal. They can enhance our view of the game and add to it.
In fact I have been doing a form of an advanced stat since I was 10 or 11 years old. My father taught me, I would take a piece of paper and mark a "good" play or "bad" play. In reality what I was really doing was tracking any movement of the puck that results in forward progression as a "good" play, any movement of the puck that resulted in a turnover or a bad result into a "bad" play. As I learned the game, I would also note bad positioning on a scoring chance or goal, or a screen on a play that want in etc.
I did it for my own enjoyment but until this year never kept track of the results. This year I have done so and I can tell you that my results have mimicked Renney's coaching decisions based on his players to a T.
More on some of my results and the coaching decisions in my next blog.
